Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma made these allegations against the Grand Old Party in Chhattisgarh

GUWAHATI: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s growth as a National leader has been perceived through the strong showing of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) performance in the recently conducted Assembly elections in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Sarma addressed 79 meetings and a couple of road shows in the elections.

Sarma stated that he felt that it was his “rebirth as a Karyakarta” at the meetings.

Taking to X, the Assam CM posted, “The recent state elections were like pilgrimages for me. It was the first time in my political career that I had travelled extensively outside of the North East region and addressed 79 meetings and a few road shows. I feel a sense of rebirth as a proud BJP Karyakarta. I witnessed tremendous love and affection for our Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji everywhere I went. I also observed unprecedented development of unparalleled magnitudes . Poverty is rapidly declining, and the living standards have significantly improved. India has truly entered a new era. May the Almighty always bless Bharat.”

Just after the mandate, the Assam CM addressed the media and thanked the people of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan for giving their mandate to the BJP, reaffirming faith in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to The New Indian, senior BJP leader from Assam, Ratna Singh stated that Sarma’s  elevation to the national stage can be found by the support he gathered in these days. “This is a testimony of his popularity and impact as he has been accepted in all the states he had campaigned,” added Singh.

There is also an interesting Assam connection to Madhya Pradesh. The Ladli Behna scheme has helped the BJP government in MP to attract voters. This scheme is similar to the Assam government’s Orunodoi scheme, which has been hugely popular among women in the state.

The ‘Orunodoi’ initiative aims to extend financial aid to over 24 lakh economically disadvantaged households in the state. The programme has raised the benefit amount from Rs 830 to Rs 1,240 for eligible women, who will receive this assistance on the first day of each month, beginning October 2020. Recognising the pivotal role of women as primary family caretakers, they are designated as the beneficiaries of this scheme. Through the ‘Orunodoi’ programme, approximately 19.10 lakh families in the state will receive a monthly financial aid of Rs. 1,000 via the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme.

Rouhin Deb, the Chief Economist of CM Secretariat, told TNI, that schemes like these which are women-centric had helped recover Assam’s economy post pandemic. “Basically a programme like ‘Orunodoi’ has always worked when the idea is to give financial freedom to women. We are taking even more number of beneficiaries and are looking forward to providing benefits to 27 lakh beneficiaries. This will also boost the GDP,” he said.

As per sources, before the launch of Laadli Behna scheme, Sarma had visited MP and met CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Apart from this, the officials of the Assam government provided presentations to the MP government officials, as per reports.

Assam CM has been the star BJP campaigner in the recently conducted elections, now perceived as an elevation of his status to an impactful national leader. Senior BJP leader, Ratna Singh, stated that Himanta Biswa Sarma’s elevation to the national stage is due to the support he gathered in these days. “This is a testimony of his popularity and impact as he has been accepted in all the states he had campaigned,” Singh added.

The Assam CM was part of 16 crucial events and also focused especially in a few of the below constituencies as given in the chart.

One of the biggest successes was seen in Mahasamund, which the BJP managed to win with Yogeshwar Raju Sinha defeating Dr Rashmi Chandrakar from the INC. The seat traditionally has been held by Congress except once in 2008. The Chhattisgarh BJP has stated that the campaign of Himanta Biswa Sarma has helped the BJP to do well in the state.

“I will just say one thing, whatever, Himanta ji has stated is direct. He has attacked the appeasement politics of the Congress, which it does in the name of appeasing Muslims,” said Kedar Gupta, senior BJP leader. The leader further stated that Himanta Biswa Sarma’s aggressive statements have stopped the alleged Gunda Raaj in Chhattisgarh.
