After stabbing Sumedha to death, the accused severed his hands at his rented flat in Jammu. He met the woman at their college.
In a painful incident, a doctor named Johar Ganie murdered his girlfriend Sumedha Sharma following a heated argument over their marriage in Jammu on the festival of Holi on Thursday.
Sumedha was also a doctor by profession. While Ganie was practising as a dentist, his girlfriend was pursuing higher studies at an institute in Delhi. They had met during their bachelor’s programme.
Sumedha was in Jammu to celebrate Holi with her family members.
On Thursday, Sumedha visited Dr Ganie at his rented flat in Janipur area of Jammu. After exchanging pleasantries, an argument broke out between them after the woman allegedly rejected his proposal of marriage.
Dr Ganie, who had allegedly proposed Sumedha for marriage earlier as well, got enraged as the argument turned heated. He grabbed a knife from his kitchen and stabbed the woman multiple times in a fit of rage.
As Sumedha lay bleeding, the man attempted suicide by severing his arms with the same knife.
Neighbours rushed to his apartment after hearing cries to find both of them lying in a pool of blood. They were rushed to a hospital where Sumedha was declared brought dead. Dr Ganie is undergoing treatment in the ICU ward.
Speaking to The New Indian, Jammu SSP Chandan Kohli said, “An FIR has been lodged against Johar and an SIT has been constituted to investigate the entire incident. The accused is getting treatment under police custody. Once he gets better, his statement will be recorded”.
The family members of the victim are in shock and have refused to make any comments to the media.
The couple was allegedly in a relationship for a long time. They were both classmates.
Sumedha was pursuing a Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) from a college in Delhi.
According to sources in Jammu, Dr Ganie was pressuring Sumedha to marry him for some time now. The couple had arguments in the past also over the same issue.
