NEW DELHI: After a 46-year hiatus, the Kartikeya Mahadev Temple in Khaggu Sarai, Sambhal, witnessed vibrant Holi celebrations on March 13. The temple, which had remained closed since the 1978 communal riots, was reopened in December 2024, marking a significant moment for the local community.
To maintain communal harmony during the festivities, the Uttar Pradesh administration implemented stringent security protocols. Members from various social and Hindu organizations actively participated in the celebrations. The Kartikeya Mahadev Temple holds significant historical and cultural importance in the region. Located near the Shahi Jama Masjid, the temple became a focal point of communal tensions following violence in November 2024. The temple, also known as the Bhasma Shankar Temple, was rediscovered and reopened in December 2024 during an anti-encroachment drive. The structure housed an idol of Lord Hanuman and a Shivling, underscoring its religious significance.
In a bid to ensure peaceful coexistence during the overlapping festivities of Holi and the Friday prayers in the month of Ramzan, the administration took proactive measures. Ten mosques, including the Shahi Jama Masjid, were covered with tarpaulin to prevent any disturbances. Sambhal SP Shrish Chandra emphasized that these steps aimed to maintain communal harmony and allow both communities to celebrate their respective festivals joyfully.
