NEW DELHI: Hockey India today announced the commencement of a year-long celebration marking 100 years of Indian hockey. This centenary milestone, which honors a century of excellence and commitment to the sport, coincides with the grand relaunch of the Hockey India League (HIL) and the historic inauguration of the Women’s HIL, a momentous advancement for gender equality in Indian sports.

The history of Indian hockey dates back to November 7, 1925, when the national governing body for the sport was established in Gwalior. This foundational moment paved the way for a legacy that has seen India rise to prominence on the global stage, capturing eight Olympic gold medals, one silver, four bronze, and a Hockey World Cup trophy, with additional silver and bronze medals. From its golden years on natural turf to modern achievements on artificial surfaces, Indian hockey has demonstrated an enduring spirit of resilience and growth.

In recent years, Indian hockey has witnessed a revival, with the men’s team securing back-to-back Olympic medals after a 52-year hiatus and the women’s team finishing fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, later claiming victory at the FIH Nations Cup. The return of the Hockey India League aligns with this revitalized momentum, reinforcing Hockey India’s commitment to its rich heritage while embracing an inspiring vision for the sport’s future.

Hockey India has pioneered several transformative initiatives to strengthen the sport’s foundation in India. Through successfully hosting major international tournaments and developing artificial turf infrastructure nationwide, Hockey India has bolstered the sport’s accessibility and professionalism. Embracing digital advancements, the organization introduced the Member Unit Portal and an online player registration system, creating an extensive database of athletes. Additionally, a structured coaching education pathway has been established to produce high-caliber officials from within India.

With a steadfast commitment to gender equality, Hockey India remains the only team sport organization in the country to provide complete pay parity, ensuring equal prize money and match-winning fees for men’s and women’s teams alike. This year’s launch of the Women’s HIL marks a pivotal step in offering equal opportunities and recognition to female athletes.

Dr. Dilip Tirkey, President of Hockey India, expressed his pride in this historic celebration, saying, “As we begin the centenary celebrations of Indian hockey, the relaunch of the Men’s Hockey India League and the inaugural Women’s Hockey India League are monumental events. This year-long celebration is a tribute to our remarkable journey and a testament to our enduring legacy. We eagerly anticipate the thrilling matches and extraordinary talent these leagues will showcase, embodying the excellence that has defined Indian hockey for a century.”

Hockey India Secretary General Shri Bhola Nath Singh added, “This centenary celebration reflects our rich heritage and our vision for the future. The return of the Hockey India League and the introduction of the Women’s League are landmark achievements in our commitment to nurturing talent and promoting equality in the sport. We look forward to a memorable year of hockey as we honor our past and build a promising future for Indian hockey.”

This centenary year is not only a celebration of Indian hockey’s historic accomplishments but also a launchpad for the next century of progress, resilience, and global triumphs in the sport.
