Punjab Chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday met with Union Home minister Amit Shah. The meeting came in the wake of the Ajnala incident, where a mob led by a pro-Khalistani group stormed a police station.
CM Mann also discussed various issues, ranging from the national border with Pakistan, increasing drone activities to releasing funds from the centre.
On February 24, a mob led by Khalistani sympathiser Amritpal Singh attacked a police station in Ajnala. The mob managed to release Amritpal’s aide, Lovepreet Singh ‘Toofan’, who was arrested in connection with a case.
Punjab Police, however, said that Lovepreet was released as no evidence was found against him.
This incident raised a serious question about the law and order situation in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-ruled Punjab.
CM Mann came to HM Shah’s residence at around 3.30 pm and the meeting went on for an hour, said sources. Sources also said that the Home minister was briefed about the present situation of law and order by CM Mann.
CM Mann also briefed him about the inter-state inputs and coordination between the state police and central intelligence.
“In the meeting, drones coming from Pakistan and drug smuggling were discussed. Issues related to the coordination between central and state agencies to further strengthen border security were also discussed by the two ministers,” sources said.
CM Mann also briefed Shah about how Punjab Police is tackling the situation of regular inflow of drugs from the Pakistan side. He also said Punjab Police has taken several measures, along with the Border Security Force (BSF), to neutralise the drug peddlers and drone-related activities.
The discussions were also held on coordination between Punjab and the Centre on the issue of law and order. CM Mann also briefed HM Shah regarding the gangsters caught in the past by Punjab Police.
