Even as the UP police continues to crackdown on illegal properties worth crores of dreaded criminal and former Samajwadi Party MP Atique Ahmed, he showered praises on Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during his latest court hearing in Lucknow. He was brought before the CBI court in relation to n the 2005 Raju Pal murder case. During his interaction with the media, Ahmed was brought for hearing in Lucknow CBI court after orders from UP CM Yogi Adityanath. “Yogi Adityanath is a brave Chief Minister. He is very honest and is working hard,” he said.
Following the order of the Supreme Court, Ahmed was shifted from Sabarmati Jail to Lucknow Jail last night. Atiq Ahmed was produced in Lucknow court amid heavy security force. Sixty-year-old Ahmed, who has been lodged in Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat for the last two years, made his first court appearance after being infected with Corona. Along with Ahmed, his brother Ashraf also reached the court. Charges will be framed against Ahmed, the main accused in the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal in Prayagraj.
Till now Ahmed was being produced through video conferencing from Sabarmati Jail for hearing. On the other hand, the legal grip of action on the mafia is being tightened.
During the last few years the Prayagraj police have arrested over two dozen persons associated with the gangster. So far Ahmed, his younger brother and former MLA Khalid Azeem and son Ali Ahmad, have been arrested. If police manages to arrest Ahmed’s eldest son Umar four people of his family, including Ahmed, will be in jail.
This action has come as a major blow for Ahmed who is known for his muscle power. Ahmed’s terror was not just limited to several districts of the state but even outside the state. Ahmed’s connection with other mafioso and gangsters also surfaced from time to time.
Ahmed would use his political influence even after the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal’s murder. Though his reputation had taken a hit, he was still in the position to impact political equations in many assembly and parliamentary seats in the state.
Ahmed has been in and out of jail since 2017. He was arrested in 2017 in connection with the attack on Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS) employees and since then he has been lodged in different jails in Uttar Pradesh. However, two years back he was shifted to Ahmedabad Jail on the orders of the Supreme Court.
In 2019, CBI lodged a case against Ahmed, his son Umar and some of their henchmen in connection with abduction and assault on a Lucknow-based realtor Mohit Jaiswal. Since then Umar is on the run and is wanted by CBI. The agency has declared a reward of ₹2 lakh on Umar’s arrest.
