In a historic move, former US President Donald Trump has been indicted by a grand jury in New York, making him the first serving or former president in US history to face criminal charges.

The charges are related to hush money allegedly paid to adult film actress Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels, in the lead up to the 2016 US presidential election.

The indictment is expected to have significant implications for the 2024 presidential election, in which Trump, who is now 76 years old, has expressed his intention to run.

Trump has consistently denied having an affair with Daniels, and has stated that the payment was made to stop her from making false and extortionist accusations.

However, a report by The Wall Street Journal in 2018 revealed that Trump had arranged a payment of $130,000 to Daniels in October 2016, just before the election. Later, in May that year, the Republican leader acknowledged reimbursing his former attorney, Michael Cohen, for the payment. At the time, Trump called the payments a “simple private transaction.”

Trump’s court appearances are expected to begin next week, as a politically charged trial begins. While the former president has repeatedly stated that he is innocent, he is likely to face significant legal challenges in the coming weeks and months.

The news of Trump’s indictment has drawn mixed reactions from across the political spectrum. Senior Republicans in Congress have rallied behind the former president, while the White House has declined to comment on the matter. In recent days, Trump has announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, speaking at his first campaign rally.

The indictment of a former US president is unprecedented in US history, and is likely to have long-lasting implications for American politics. As the trial begins next week, all eyes will be on the courtroom to see how this unprecedented legal battle plays out.
