The by-election for this Assembly constituency was necessitated because of the resignation of Hoshyar Singh. Dehra is one of the three constituencies where by-elections were held on Wednesday, July 10. The Congress won the Dehra Assembly seat for the first time. The others are Hamirpur and Nalagarh. In Hamirpur, Congress’ Pushpinder Verma has taken a lead of 200 votes after the first round of counting against BJP candidate Ashish Sharma, officials confirmed.
The Nalagarh constituency recorded the highest voter turnout at 79.04%, followed by Hamirpur and Dehra, contributing to overall voter participation of 71% across the three bypolls, as per state election department data.
The vacancies in these seats arose after three Independent legislators, who had previously supported the BJP in the Rajya Sabha polls, resigned from the state assembly on March 22 and subsequently joined the BJP. The assembly speaker accepted their resignations on June 3, declaring the seats vacant and necessitating the by-elections.
In response, the BJP fielded all three former MLAs from their respective constituencies, while the Congress nominated Kamlesh Thakur in Dehra, Pushpinder Verma in Hamirpur, and Hardeep Singh Baba in Nalagarh.
While these bypolls are not expected to alter the majority in the 68-member House, where Congress currently holds 38 seats compared to BJP’s 27, they remain crucial for assessing political dynamics and local voter sentiments in the region. Of the 86,520 voters in this assembly segment, 65.42 per cent exercised their franchise on July 10.
