Employment, education, university and growing inflation. The youth of Himachal Pradesh’s Una looked rooted in practicality as they chalked out their demands ahead of the November 12 state assembly elections.

The team of The New Indian spoke to the students of the city’s only government college – Government PG College – to understand their hope for the government that will form after the election results on December 8.

Ayush, who is a BA second-year student at the college, told The New Indian that the youth of Una want placement and employment. “After doing PG, youths keep seeking a job as no company comes for placement. Government should look into this direction,” said Ayush.

Another student, Rajesh Kumar, said the students have to go to Punjab or Delhi for further studies. “We have to go to Delhi or Chandigarh for our further studies. If one university comes to our district, it will be a great thing for us,” he said.

Echoing the sentiments, Anmol Thakur, another student, said, “University is a must for the betterment of youth.”

Making her choice clear, Tanya Thakur said, “We will vote for a good education policy. As far as college is concerned, some more subjects should be added for professional studies.”

Highlighting a pertinent point, Thakur said many parents cannot afford to send their children to Chandigarh or Delhi for further studies. “If a university comes, it will be a great help for them,” she added.

Chirpy Apeksha Singh is clear that her town needs more sports infrastructure. “I would vote on the issue of sports in our city. There are no proper teachers, no proper playgrounds and no scope for players like us who want to build a career in sports, but are not getting an opportunity,” Singh said.

While sports are on Singh’s mind, the youngster is clear that inflation is a big issue. “Our education became very costly. We don’t know how the government will tackle this situation. But we hope for a solution to this problem,” she added.
