COCHIN: Heavy downpour and strong winds have caused misery in Cochin, Thrissur and adjoining towns of central Kerala and thus affecting the normal life of citizens. Water logging in the main centers have affected transportation in the city. A major part of the Kochi city corporation has been inundated. Houses and roads in the busy city centers were flooded in the heavy rain that spanned for a short interval.

Several parts of Kochi including tech hub Info Park and the surrounding areas were flooded with many two-wheelers and four-wheelers submerged in water. At least 20 houses in Kalamassery and Vyttila areas were inundated following the heavy downpour on Wednesday late evening.

Even after the rain stopped, many prime areas like MG road, Kadavanthra are experiencing waterlogging. Residents complained that the inadequate pre-monsoon road works and drainage cleaning activities by the corporation is the major reason for water logging near apartments and shops.

“We, the residents in Cochin, have been facing the brunt of the inefficiency of our corporation for years. There are at least three main canals in my vicinity that are not cleaned so that the water is pumped out whenever water logging persists. However, as you see most of the road works and infrastructure works are yet to be completed on time, the arrival pre-monsoon showers have worsened the situation. The elected representatives are too not reaching to us in these situations. This has been happening every year for many years and yet the authorities are sitting in the dark without a feasible solution”, said Lenin CV, a resident of Anjumana in Cochin.
