Haryana Elections are scheduled to take place on Oct 1

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections. The polls will be held in a single phase on October 1, with the counting of votes scheduled for October 4.

The Haryana election will witness a highly anticipated four-way contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress, the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The current BJP-led government’s term is set to expire on November 3, 2024.

The BJP, which won 40 seats in the 2019 election and formed a coalition with the JJP, faces a different landscape this time. The alliance broke earlier in 2024, leading to an intensified political battle.

The Congress, led by former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, is aiming to return to power after being in opposition since 2014.

The Congress is expected to run independently, with no formal alliances on the state level. Hooda emphasized the party’s confidence in winning without external support.

In contrast, the AAP has announced its intention to contest all 90 seats in the state, marking a significant challenge for established players.

The ruling BJP has appointed Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as the election in-charge, signaling its readiness to defend its position.

Key election issues in Haryana include the Agnipath military recruitment scheme, farmers’ demands for a legal guarantee of minimum support prices (MSP), and sexual assault allegations made by state wrestlers.

The elections promise to be crucial for all parties, with the outcome likely to shape Haryana’s political landscape for the next five years.

The ECI is expected to announce the schedule for the Maharashtra Assembly elections soon.
