Harsh Malhotra: From grassroots Advocate to Union Minister of State

New Delhi: Harsh Malhotra, a newcomer to Parliament, who was sworn in as a Union Minister of State in the Narendra Modi government, is known for his organizational skills and grassroots efforts to bolster the party in Delhi.

Malhotra’s selection over more prominent figures such as three-time MP Manoj Tiwari and Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of former union minister Sushma Swaraj, has made him a surprising choice for the ministerial role.

In the 2024 general elections, Harsh Malhotra was chosen to represent the East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency, replacing Gautam Gambhir, who decided to prioritize his cricket career.

Malhotra emerged victorious against Kuldeep Kumar from the INDIA bloc with a margin of 93,663 votes.

Currently, he holds the position of General Secretary in the BJP’s Delhi unit. Malhotra is an alumnus of Hansraj College, University of Delhi, where he completed his graduation and obtained an LLB in 1987.

His political journey began in 2012 when he was elected as a councillor from Welcome Colony in the erstwhile East Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Before becoming mayor in 2015-16, the BJP leader served as the chairman of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation’s (EDMC) education committee. In this role, he initiated and successfully executed the “Suposhan” program, which aimed to eliminate malnutrition among roughly 60,000 primary students across 398 municipal schools.

The newly appointed MP began his political journey with the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) youth wing in 1984. Over the years, he held various positions, including Yuva Morcha Mandal, President and Secretary of the District Yuva Morcha. In 2005, he was appointed as the District General Secretary Organization, and two years later, in 2007, he ascended to the role of District President of the BJP. Harsh Malhotra’s significant political achievements include his election as Mayor of East Delhi Municipal Corporation in 2015, where he initiated innovative projects, such as converting construction waste into wealth and generating electricity from municipal garbage.

As the head of the Delhi Printers Association, which boasts over 6,000 members and is the largest of its kind in Delhi, Malhotra has been a dedicated advocate for the printing community’s welfare.

Harsh Malhotra, born on April 24, 1964, in Delhi, is the eldest of three sons of educators Raj and Vijay Kishan Malhotra. In 1986, he entered the printing industry. Over the past 24 years, Malhotra has been dedicated to promoting organ donation through his role as a founding member of “Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti.” He has also initiated innovative projects such as converting construction and building waste into wealth and generating electricity from municipal garbage.
