NEW DELHI: A Gurgaon man recently paid a Rs. 45,000 electricity bill for two months. Taking to social media platform X, Singh expressed his disbelief, writing, “Paid the electricity bill, now thinking of switching to candles.”

His post quickly went viral, drawing a mix of reactions. Many netizens suggested that high bills could be due to the use of ACs and other appliances. When The New India team talked to Jasveer Singh, co-founder of Gurugram-based company Hood Singh, he mentioned living in a 4 BHK flat with five ACs. However, they rarely use three ACs, as both he and his friend spend most of their time in their offices.

“I didn’t get time to inquire about the bill with BSES, but I think they will now send me candles to use. Or I myself will switch to candles after this,” he said.

Responding to netizens questioning his electricity usage, Singh replied, “I agree that using fewer electricity appliances to save electricity and reduce the bill is something everyone should do. But in this extreme heatwave in Delhi and Gurugram, it is near impossible to skip using ACs and refrigerators.”

When discussing alternatives, he added, “There is no subsidy plan in Gurgaon like Delhi. If we use solar, we can save up to 50% on the bill. So, we are thinking about installing solar, but we are still exploring the ideas.”

“The government should come up with something, like a subsidy or something. As there are mostly migrated populations in Gurgaon and at this rate they will have no other option but to bear the heat.”

However in recent reports a Mumbai resident also received an electricity bill of ₹66,690 for a month. Responding to that a netizen on Reddit said, “Ac k jagah turbines chalaya kya bro”. A Delhi man also shared screenshot of Rs 30,000 for the  month of June
