NEW DELHI: A section of Gokalpuri Metro Station in northeast Delhi collapsed on Thursday morning, causing injuries to four people and killing one person who got trapped under the debris.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced that the family members of the deceased will receive an ex gratia compensation of Rs 15 lakh.
The statement issued also mentioned that those with minor injuries would receive a compensation of Rs 50,000, whereas those with severe injuries would be granted Rs 2.5 lakh.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shahdara, Joy Tirkey, provided insight into the situation, stating, “The boundary of the metro station has collapsed onto the road, with approximately 40-50 metres of it falling down. Around 4-5 people beneath suffered injuries, one of whom has a broken leg and another has sustained more severe injuries and had to be extracted from the debris.”
According to initial reports, the collapse resulted in three to four two-wheelers parked on the ground being buried under the rubble.
DCP Tickey also shared, “The metro staff and local police station collaborated to extract the injured. We are currently attempting to identify them, but one remains unconscious. A JCB is operating behind to clear the debris, and the hanging portion will also be brought down as it poses a risk of falling at any moment.”
The incident occurred at 11 am when a portion of the boundary wall and a slab of the elevated platform collapsed onto the road below. Other police personnels revealed that the critically injured person was on his scooter near the metro station when the incident took place.
According to the officials, one person was trapped under the debris and has been rushed to GTB Hospital. Efforts are underway to identify the injured individuals, and a case under relevant sections of the law will be registered.
Authorities are actively involved in rescue operations, with metro staff, cops, and locals working together to remove the debris using cranes and JCBs. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the collapse.
DCP shared, “A case will be registered under the relevant sections of the law.
The collapse prompted a swift response from the Delhi Fire Service, with four fire tenders dispatched to the scene. Video footage captured by bystanders showcases the efforts of police personnel in clearing the rubble and rescuing people trapped underneath.
As the situation develops, officials are working to ensure the safety of commuters and residents in the vicinity.
