Military Cooperation and Training Initiatives
India has long been a key partner in Nepal’s defense modernization efforts, providing training and expertise across various military fields. General Dwivedi’s visit is expected to highlight the continued exchange of military personnel, with over 300 Nepali soldiers having trained in India this year alone. These training programs focus on vital areas such as counterinsurgency, leadership, and peacekeeping operations, further strengthening the defense capabilities of both countries.
Moreover, the two nations have an ongoing commitment to mutual defense development through regular exchanges and courses held at prestigious military institutions. This partnership ensures that both armies stay at the forefront of modern military strategies and technologies.

Joint Exercises and Bilateral Cooperation
A key component of India-Nepal military relations is the annual Surya Kiran exercise, focusing on counterterrorism, disaster relief, and humanitarian assistance. Set to hold its 18th edition in Nepal this December, the joint exercise continues to improve operational coordination between the Indian and Nepali armies.
Additionally, India has supported Nepal’s military modernization by supplying equipment such as small arms, vehicles, and training simulators. The Nepal-India Bilateral Consultative Group on Security Issues (NIBCGSI) has also facilitated strategic discussions on defense cooperation.
Honoring Shared Military Legacy
General Dwivedi’s visit will further solidify the symbolic ties between the two nations, including the tradition of conferring the honorary General rank on the respective Chiefs of Army Staff. The strong connection between the Indian and Nepali militaries is also reinforced through the large number of Indian ex-servicemen residing in Nepal, who contribute significantly to both nations’ socio-economic development and cultural exchanges.
A Visit to Muktinath Temple
As part of his visit, General Dwivedi is expected to visit the Muktinath Temple, a revered site in Nepal. This gesture follows in the footsteps of General Bipin Rawat, India’s first Chief of Defense Staff, who was set to visit the temple before his untimely passing in 2021. In his honor, a bell named ‘Bipin Bell’ was installed at the temple in February 2023.
Strengthening Regional Security
General Dwivedi’s visit highlights the enduring strength of the India-Nepal defense partnership. It will further cement the commitment of both countries to regional security, stability, and combating common threats such as terrorism and extremism. As both nations continue to deepen their defense cooperation, the India-Nepal military relationship remains pivotal to ensuring peace and stability in South Asia.
