In an unusual incident, a woman tied the knot alongside the hospital bed of her mother in the intensive care unit (ICU), two hours before the patient lost her life in Gaya district of Bihar.

Visuals show the bride and the groom performing rituals and seeking blessings of the patient inside the ICU ward of Arsh Hospital in Gaya on Sunday.

According to hospital authorities, patient Poonam Kumari Verma had been critically ill for the past several days despite continuous treatment by a group of doctors.

As her health deteriorated further, doctors declared that she could die at any moment and suggested her husband Lalan Kumar and other family members fulfil the patient’s last wish.

When asked, the woman patient said that she wanted to see her daughter Chandni Kumari’s wedding before she departed for the heavily adobe. Though the wedding was scheduled for Monday, December 26, family members called in the bride and the groom, and some close relatives to the hospital immediately.

Despite the gloom over the patient’s imminent death, nearly a dozen attendants including hospital staff had smiles on their faces as the couple took wedding vows for life. Though she was unable to speak, she did bless the couple with her gestures.

However, the momentary celebrations turned into mourning as the bride’s mother passed away within two hours of their wedding.

Chandani Kumari, the bride, said, “My mother was working as an ANM (Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery) at the Magadh Medical College and Hospital, and was suffering from heart disease.”

The patient was a resident of Bali village in Guraru block of Gaya district.

Groom Sumit Gaurav, an engineer by profession, is a resident of Salempur village of the same block.
