Gautam Gambhir, India’s head coach, was unsure about Rohit Sharma’s participation in the SCG Test during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
NEW DELHI: Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian team, was non-committal regarding Rohit Sharma’s participation in the SCG Test during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Sharma’s recent form has been under intense scrutiny, particularly following his underwhelming performance in the MCG Test, where he scored 3 and 9 runs.
When asked about the captain’s selection for the Sydney Test, Gambhir noted that player fitness and preparation were the primary factors in finalizing the team. “Rohit is still a valuable asset to the team, but we need to assess his physical condition and mental readiness before making a decision,” Gambhir remarked.

While Sharma’s absence from media duties during the tour raised questions, Gambhir reassured that it wasn’t a sign of any issues. “We give players space when they need it, especially in such crucial moments. We are focused on preparing the best possible squad,” he said, highlighting the importance of ensuring the team is in peak condition.
The uncertainty surrounding Sharma’s place in the team is compounded by his poor form in recent months. Despite his leadership qualities and experience, his struggles with the bat have sparked debate about whether the Indian team would be better off with a change in the opening slot.
“The team’s needs always come first,” Gambhir explained, adding that no decision would be made lightly. “We will evaluate every option and make a decision based on what’s best for the team. There’s no rush; we will take our time.”

In case Rohit Sharma is left out of the Sydney Test, Shubman Gill is a strong contender to replace him at the top of the order. With his impressive performances in recent matches, Gill has made a compelling case for a return to the XI.
KL Rahul, who has previously opened in Tests, could also be moved back to the opening slot, providing further flexibility for the team management. Both options could be explored depending on the team’s strategy for the crucial Test.
