The theme of India’s presidency is ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ or ‘One Earth, One Future, One Family’.
India’s top G20 official Amitabh Kant on Tuesday called upon all state governments to take the country’s presidency of the bloc as an opportunity to transform their cities and showcase diverse cultures.
Speaking to The New Indian in Mumbai, India’s G20 Sherpa Kant said that the group’s meetings in different cities present an opportunity for the country to transform itself.
“Under India’s presidency, 215-odd meetings of G20 will take place in 56 different cities. This is a unique opportunity to showcase our culture and our handicraft. It is a unique opportunity to put forward your One District, One Product (ODOP). Every state should use this opportunity to transform itself,” said Kant.
The theme of India’s presidency is ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ or ‘One Earth, One Future, One Family’, the former NITI Aayog CEO said.
“It means we all belong to the same cosmos. There may be different political thoughts and ideologies but we all need to work for the common good of the citizens of the world,” said the Sherpa.
Kant, who was in Mumbai to attend the formal close-door discussion of G20’s Development Working Group, said that member countries like the United States, France, Germany, the UK, the European Union (EU), Japan, Italy, China and Russia will deliberate on issues of economic growth.
“Many issues like inclusive resilient sustainable growth, accelerating the pace of SDG, digital transformation, women-led development, multilateral institutions for the 21st century will be taken up and debated under India’s presidency of G20,” he said.
In a historic moment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally assumed the G20 presidency from Indonesia during the group’s summit in Bali on December 1.
The G20, or Group of Twenty, is an intergovernmental forum of the world’s 20 major developed and developing economies, making it the premier forum for international economic cooperation.
PM Modi has called India’s presidency a “presidency of healing, harmony and hope”, with an aim of making the group ‘People’s G20’.
In its endeavour to involve all political parties and government, the Central government held an all-party meeting earlier this month to discuss various aspects of India’s presidency.
Speaking at the all-party meeting attended by many senior leaders, PM Modi said that India’s G20 presidency belongs to the entire nation. “It is a unique opportunity to showcase India’s strengths to the entire world. There is global curiosity and attraction towards India today, which further increases the potential of India’s G20 presidency,” he said.
