SRINAGAR: Kashmir and parts of Jammu experienced widespread snowfall on Thursday, marking the season’s first in many areas. This caused major disruptions, including the cancellation of all flights at Srinagar Airport and the closure of critical roads like the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. Farmers in Jammu’s rain-fed regions welcomed the accompanying rainfall in the plains, though the weather also resulted in a tragedy: a female tourist was killed by a rolling stone in Ramban district.
The Valley was blanketed with varying snow depths. Srinagar recorded 8 inches, while Qazigund, Kokernag, and Kulgam accumulated up to 2 feet. Gulmarg saw over a foot of snow, and snowfall continued into the night in several areas.

The harsh weather prompted authorities to shut down key routes, including Mughal Road, Srinagar-Leh Highway, and Sinthan Pass. Around 350 vehicles were stranded on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway due to slippery conditions. Inspector General of Police (Traffic), Suleman Choudhary, told The New Indian that traffic would resume on Saturday, depending on road conditions. He advised commuters to avoid traveling until the weather improves.
Several districts, including Anantnag, faced power outages as snowfall disrupted electricity supplies, even in areas equipped with smart meters. Meanwhile, the University of Kashmir postponed all examinations scheduled for December 28.

Police conducted multiple rescue operations as snowfall left passengers stranded in remote areas. In Sinthan Top, nine individuals trapped in a skidded vehicle were rescued by Anantnag Police, while Poonch Police saved six people stuck on the Mughal Road. Authorities continue to urge caution for those traveling through snow-prone regions.
The snowfall, though beautiful, has brought challenges and risks, highlighting the need for preparedness during the harsh winter months in the region.
