Srinagar: Four Army personnel lost their lives, and two others sustained critical injuries when their vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in the Sakerkote Payeen area of Bandipora district. The accident was attributed to adverse weather and low visibility.

 

Officials said the mishap occurred while the soldiers were on duty. Rescue teams, including police, Army personnel, and locals, quickly arrived at the scene and evacuated the injured to the district hospital.

 

“Two soldiers were declared dead on arrival at Bandipora District Hospital, while the remaining four were transferred to Srinagar. Tragically, two more succumbed to their injuries en route. The other two remain in critical condition,” the Army stated.

The deceased soldiers were identified as Lance Naik Jitender, Havildar Hari Ram, Gunner Nitesh, and Pawan Kumar. The injured, Havildar Balappa and Lance Naik Garili are undergoing treatment.

 

In a statement, the Chinar Corps expressed profound sorrow over the loss and thanked local residents for their timely support during the rescue operation. “We salute the bravery of our soldiers and extend our heartfelt condolences to their families. The Army deeply appreciates the assistance of Kashmiri locals,” the statement read.

 

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha conveyed his condolences, saying, “Deeply grieved by the loss of our brave soldiers. The nation is forever indebted to their service. My thoughts are with their families, and I pray for the recovery of the injured.”

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed sorrow, stating, “This tragedy in Bandipora is heartbreaking. We honour the selfless service of the martyred soldiers and wish for the swift recovery of the injured.”

 

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge urged authorities to implement measures to prevent such incidents, while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi also mourned the loss and praised the soldiers’ dedication.

 

This unfortunate incident comes on the heels of a similar tragedy in Poonch last week, where five soldiers lost their lives, highlighting the risks faced by the Armed Forces in treacherous terrains. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
