4 patients dead as ambulance crashes into toll booth

BYNDOOR: On Wednesday, a speeding ambulance collided with a toll booth near Byndoor in Karnataka, killing four persons, one of whom was a patient.

Four people were critically injured as well in the accident which took place at NH 66 at Shiruru village. The ambulance was carrying a patient from Kundapura to Honnavara.

The horrendous accident was recorded by the CCTV cameras at the toll gate and has gone viral on social media platforms. The video shows the vehicle turning turtle and throwing the patient & attenders out of the vehicle after hitting a pillar at the toll gate.

Byndoor PSI said that there were eight persons in the ambulance, including the driver. The ambulance was traveling from Honnavar to Udupi with a patient, Gajanana. The patient was undergoing treatment at Sridevi Hospital in Honnavar and was later referred to a hospital in Udupi.

“While the toll gate employees were removing the plastic caution boards kept as barriers that were blocking the path, the speeding vehicle lost control and crashed into the toll gate plaza,” he said.

Among the deceased was Gajananth, 45, the patient who was being carried in the ambulance. Three paramedics – Jyothi, Lokesh, and Manju – also passed away in the tragic accident.
