Former West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in critical condition, shifted to invasive ventilation

KOLKATA: Former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who is suffering from bacterial pneumonia, has been shifted to invasive ventilation. A nine-member medical board is monitoring his condition and has decided to conduct a CT scan to get a better understanding of his condition.

The latest medical bulletin from Woodlands Hospital, where Bhattacharjee is admitted, states that he was “electively intubated and ventilated last night due to altered sensorium and poor work of breathing. He is hemodynamically stable. A CT Thorax is planned.”

Bhattacharjee, who is a chronic COPD patient, had suffered from COVID-19 in 2020. The bacterial pneumonia has caused him to have troubled breathing.

Although the medical bulletin earlier stated that he is hemodynamically stable, the medical board monitoring his condition decided to undergo a few blood tests of Bhattacharjee.

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, who met Bhattacharjee and his family on Monday, said that he will get the best of treatment. “He will get the best treatment that is there. We all wish him a very speedy recovery,” Dhankhar said.

Bhattacharjee’s wife Meera Bhattacharya and daughter Suchetana Bhattacharya are with him at the hospital.

He was admitted to Woodlands on July 27 following lower respiratory tract infection and Type II respiratory failure. A multidisciplinary medical team is closely monitoring his progress.
