NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the recipients of the Bharat Ratna award. Former Prime Ministers PV Narasimha Rao and Charan Singh, along with eminent scientist Dr. MS Swaminathan, are set to be honored with India’s highest civilian award.

PV Narasimha Rao, who served as Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996, is celebrated for his pivotal role in steering India towards economic liberalisation. His visionary leadership laid the groundwork for India’s economic advancement, fostering prosperity and growth.

“Delighted to share that our former Prime Minister, Shri PV Narasimha Rao Garu, will be honoured with the Bharat Ratna,” the PM announced on X, on Friday.

Beyond his tenure as Prime Minister, Rao’s extensive contributions as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Union Minister, and longstanding member of both Parliament and Legislative Assembly underscore his profound impact on Indian politics and governance.

PV Narasimha Rao’s grandson, NV Subhash, said the former PM’s contribution was ignored for a long time. “I am really delighted Narasimha Rao ji has got the Bharat Ratna. I am very happy and thankful to PM Modi. His contribution has been recognised,”

Prime Minister Modi lauded Narasimha Rao’s visionary leadership and multifaceted contributions to India’s growth and development. His transformative policies, particularly in economic reform, paved the way for India’s integration into the global economy, while his endeavors in foreign policy, language, and education sectors enriched the nation’s cultural and intellectual heritage.

Hailing Rao for “fostering a new era of economic development”, PM Modi said his tenure as Prime Minister was marked by significant measures that opened India to global markets.

Charan Singh, a staunch advocate for the rights of workers and farmers, briefly held the office of Prime Minister in 1979. Throughout his illustrious career, he championed the cause of farmers, dedicating his life to their welfare. His commitment to democracy during the Emergency period and his tireless efforts in nation-building exemplify his enduring legacy.

“It is the good fortune of our government that former Prime Minister of the country Chaudhary Charan Singh is being honoured with Bharat Ratna. This honor is dedicated to his incomparable contribution to the country”, PM Modi wrote in a separate post.

MS Swaminathan, acclaimed as the architect of India’s Green Revolution, revolutionised agriculture and transformed the country’s farming landscape. His pioneering research and advocacy for sustainable agricultural practices have left an indelible mark on India’s agricultural sector, ensuring food security and rural development.
