Former BJP MP Brijendra Singh joins Congress, Triggers political ripples

NEW DELHI: In a significant political development, Brijendra Singh, former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Hisar Assembly constituency in Haryana, announced his resignation from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Singh, who served the nation diligently for 21 years, cited ‘compelling political reasons’ for his decision, marking a pivotal moment in his political career.

In a post on X on Sunday, Brijendra Singh said: “I have resigned from the primary membership of BJP due to compelling political reasons. I extend gratitude to the party’s national president Sh. JP Nadda, Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi, & Sh. Amit Shah for allowing me to serve as the member of parliament for Hisar.”

His resignation, announced on social media platform X, was swiftly followed by his formal induction into the Indian National Congress, underscoring his strategic alignment with the Opposition camp.

Having secured the 9th rank in the Civil Services Examination in 1998, Brijendra Singh brought to the table a rich blend of administrative experience and academic prowess, having pursued a Master’s degree in modern history from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Hailing from the historic town of Jind in Haryana, Singh’s lineage boasts illustrious figures, including his father, former Union Minister and BJP leader Birender Singh, and the revered Jat icon Chhotu Ram, his great grandfather.

Addressing concerns about nepotism during his electoral debut in 2019, Brijendra Singh emphasized his independent trajectory in politics, distancing himself from any perception of being a product of nepotism. Despite his familial ties, Singh asserted his commitment to charting his path, resonating with voters in Hisar.

Singh’s tenure as a BJP MP witnessed notable engagements, including his public support for wrestlers protesting against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment allegations. Speculations surrounding his potential shift to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2022 stirred the political landscape, although Singh promptly quelled such rumours, reaffirming his allegiance to his party.

Acknowledging the role of BJP leaders, including party president J.P. Nadda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in his political trajectory, Singh expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the MP for Hisar. His decision to join the Congress was met with the presence of senior party leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and resonated with concerns raised during political rallies, particularly regarding alliances in Haryana.

As Singh embarks on this new chapter in his political journey, his decision reverberates across the political spectrum, setting the stage for intensified electoral dynamics in Haryana. With his track record of administrative acumen and political astuteness, Brijendra Singh’s transition to the Congress adds a layer of intrigue to the unfolding narrative of Indian politics.
