SRINAGAR : Former Gurez legislator Faqir Muhammad Khan was found dead at his government residence in Tulsibagh, Srinagar, after allegedly ending his life with his licensed firearm.

 

Khan, who contested the 2024 Assembly elections on a BJP ticket, secured 7,246 votes but lost to National Conferenceโ€™s Nazir Ahmad Khan by a narrow margin of 1,132 votes. His sudden demise has triggered an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

 

Srinagar Police, in an official statement, confirmed the incident, stating, โ€œA firearm-related incident was reported in the Tulsibagh locality, resulting in the demise of former legislator Faqir Muhammad Khan, son of Jumma Khan, a resident of Gurez.โ€

 

Authorities have initiated legal proceedings under Section 194 of the BNSS at Shergarhi Police Station. Preliminary findings indicate a possible suicide, though further inquiries are ongoing to explore all possible angles.

 

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly observed two minutes of silence to honor the late leader, with lawmakers and political figures mourning his untimely death.
