NEW DELHI: The Congress party has announced Alka Lamba as its candidate for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections from the 51-Kalkaji constituency.

This sets the stage for a high-stakes contest in one of the capital’s prominent political battlegrounds, as current Chief Minister Atishi Marlena represents the area.

Atishi secured the Kalkaji seat in the 2020 elections with a significant margin of over 55,000 votes.

She will seek to retain her position in this election as well. In the 2020 contest, BJP’s Dharambir came second, while Congress’ Shivani Chopra finished a distant third, securing fewer than 5,000 votes.

Reacting to her candidacy, Lamba criticized the leadership dynamics within AAP.

“I don’t think I am contesting against the CM. Arvind Kejriwal himself called Atishi a ‘temporary CM,’ so she has only a month left. Kejriwal won’t return anyway. As a woman holding a constitutional post, she is disrespecting her position. Atishi must clarify her stance on being called a ‘temporary CM’ by Kejriwal,” she said.

Lamba’s political journey began during her university days with the Congress-backed National Students Union of India (NSUI).

She gained prominence in 2015 when she was elected as an MLA from Chandni Chowk on an AAP ticket.

However, her association with AAP ended in 2019 following disagreements over a resolution in the Delhi Assembly seeking to revoke the Bharat Ratna awarded to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Lamba opposed the resolution and subsequently returned to the Congress fold.

Lamba was appointed president of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Mahila Morcha last year.

In her current role, she has been instrumental in mobilizing support for the party.

Her candidacy from Kalkaji is seen as a strategic move by the Congress to strengthen its position in the constituency, where it faces stiff competition from the ruling AAP and the BJP.
