NEW DELHI: The Special Cell of Delhi Police has lodged an FIR against Facebook and several unidentified users, referred to as ‘X users’, for posting doctored videos of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In the misleading video, Shah appears to claim that the BJP will end reservations.
The FIR was filed following a complaint received on April 28 from Sinku Sharan Singh, an official associated with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The complaint highlighted that doctored videos were being circulated by users on Facebook and Twitter, spreading misleading information with the potential to create disharmony among communities and disrupt public tranquillity and order.

The official statement read, “FIR was filed against X and Facebook users circulating edited statements of Home Minister Amit Shah to falsely claim he advocated ending reservations. Those operating such X handles across the country are on the radar of the Special Cell. Early arrests are likely. Those who deleted videos are also on the radar.”
According to the content of the MHA complaint and the attached report, a prima facie offence under sections 153/153A/465/469/171G of the IPC and 66C of the IT Act has been made.

Senior police officials are currently investigating the matter. The police have stated that their monitoring team is working diligently to identify the culprits who spread the doctored video.
The video falsely portrays Shah as advocating for the abolition of reservations for SCs, STs, and OBCs. Originally, the video showed Shah discussing the removal of a specific reservation for Muslims in Telangana. Social media handles, including some affiliated with the Congress party, shared the edited video, claiming that BJP would abolish OBC and SC/ST reservations if re-elected
