New Delhi: The Delhi Police have taken legal action against a resident of the capital city for making inappropriate and offensive remarks online about Smriti Singh, the widow of Captain Anshuman Singh, who was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra for gallantry.

According to police sources, the complaint was filed in response to a letter from the National Commission for Women (NCW), urging swift action including the arrest of the accused and a comprehensive report within three days.

The FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000. The offensive remarks were allegedly made on a photograph of Smriti Singh receiving the award from the President of India during a ceremony.

“The remarks were deemed lewd and highly derogatory, causing widespread outrage on social media,” stated a senior police official.

The NCW was quick to respond, officially notifying the police after the offensive comment gained attention from concerned netizens. The commission identified the accused as Ahmad K, a resident of Delhi, citing violations of Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Captain Anshuman Singh, a medical officer in the Indian Army’s 26 Punjab Regiment, posthumously received the Kirti Chakra for his heroic actions during Operation Meghdoot in Siachen. He sacrificed his life while saving fellow soldiers and critical medical equipment from a fire incident.

In a related development, Captain Anshuman’s parents, Ravi Pratap Singh and Manju Singh, expressed concerns regarding entitlements for their daughter-in-law, Smriti Singh, after their son’s demise. They have requested Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to reconsider the criteria for next of kin (NOK) entitlements to prevent similar issues in the future.
