NEW DELHI: Devendra Fadnavis is set to be sworn in as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan on Thursday, beginning his third term in the top post. The BJP leadership finalized Fadnavis today as its choice after extensive deliberations, bringing clarity to the long-debated issue. His name was unanimously approved by newly elected BJP legislators.

Preparations for the grand oath-taking ceremony come two weeks after the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance’s sweeping win, securing 230 out of 288 seats in the Assembly. Fadnavis plans to meet Governor CP Radhakrishnan today to stake claim to form the government officially.

The decision caps 11 days of suspense post-election. Shiv Sena leaders initially pushed for Eknath Shinde to continue as Chief Minister, citing his leadership during the elections. However, with the BJP emerging as the largest party with 132 seats out of the 148 seats it contested., the leadership asserted its claim to the post.

Shinde eventually stated he would not pose an obstacle and would abide by the decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Despite this, internal posturing by Shiv Sena leaders continued, emphasizing Shinde’s pivotal role in Mahayuti’s success.

The BJP’s strong majority, requiring only one ally for a stable government, diminished Sena’s bargaining power. Reports suggest the NCP has pledged support, strengthening the alliance. As the BJP prepares to lead the government, tomorrow’s oath-taking ceremony will solidify Fadnavis’ return to power.
