NEW DELHI: Formula 1 has announced a significant step toward its sustainability goals with an expanded investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Partnering with Qatar Airways and DHL, the sport aims to cut more than 8,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) emissions in 2024. This marks a 19% reduction in emissions for its air freight operations compared to traditional aviation fuel.
These efforts are part of F1’s broader strategy to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2030, which requires at least a 50% reduction from its 2018 levels.

Key Measures to Reduce Carbon Footprint
Investment in SAF:
Formula 1 is now the first member of Qatar Airways’ SAF program, leveraging the fuel to power its global operations. Qatar Airways has also scaled up its own SAF usage, reducing its fleet emissions by 19,000 tCO2e in 2024.
Efficient Freight Solutions:
DHL’s biofuel-powered trucks have already slashed emissions by 83% for European races, and the sport is reworking its race calendar to minimize travel distances. Redesigned cargo containers and efficient aircraft like Boeing 777s have further reduced emissions by 17%.

Advanced Fuel on the Track:
From 2026, all F1 cars will run on 100% advanced sustainable fuel. F2 and F3 are ahead of schedule, transitioning to full sustainability by next season after achieving a 55% sustainable fuel blend in 2023.
Low-Carbon Energy at Events:
Starting next season, key operational areas at European Grands Prix, like the Pit Lane and Paddock, will be powered by lower-carbon solutions, cutting emissions by over 90%.
Commitment to Innovation
Ellen Jones, Head of ESG at Formula 1, highlighted the importance of these initiatives:
“This investment is a critical step in delivering our Net Zero 2030 target. Through collaboration with our teams, the FIA, and partners, we are reducing emissions and driving technologies that make a wider impact.”
Formula 1’s commitment goes beyond SAF. Measures like regional hubs, an industry-leading remote broadcast setup, and alternative energy use at events further underline its dedication to sustainability.
With these changes, F1 continues to set the pace for a greener future in motorsport.
