NEW DELHI: Prime minister Narendra Modi is likely to reshuffle his cabinet soon. It will be his last cabinet rejig and it will be done keeping in mind the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

Sources also told The New Indian that the cabinet reshuffle is likely to take place in the next seven days.

“On Thursday, PM Modi held a meeting with Union Home minister Amit Shah at his official residence to discuss the cabinet reshuffle,” sources said.

“This cabinet reshuffle is likely to happen any time soon after Saturday but before the Monsoon session of Parliament,” sources added. The monsoon session of Parliament is likely to start on July 17.

Interestingly, last week, PM Modi chaired the meeting of the Council of ministers where the departments made presentations regarding their work. PM Modi also shared his Vision for India in 2047 and urged the departments to finish all pending government work by December, ahead of the Lok Sabha election next year.

Following the meeting with the council of ministers, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president JP Nadda held a series of marathon meetings with ministers from the states where assembly elections will be held before the Lok Sabha election.

Nadda also holds meetings with prominent ministers from PM Modi’s council of ministers including Nirmala Sitharaman, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Prahlad Patel, Arjun Meghwal, Kiren Rijiju, SP Singh Baghel, Bhupender Yadav and Mansukh Mandaviya, among others.

It was following these meetings that the BJP announced organisational changes in various states, with Union minister G Kishan Reddy named as the president of the Telangana unit, Daggubati Purandeswari appointed as the president of the Andhra Pradesh unit, Babulal Marandi as the president of the Jharkhand unit and former Congressman Sunil Jakhar as the president of the Punjab unit.

“There is a lot of reshuffle in the party and the reshuffle in the cabinet will be done keeping in mind the Lok Sabha election. The party aims to win maximum seats in 2024,” sources told The New Indian. “The cabinet reshuffle is likely to be held on July 9 or 10,” sources further said.

Regarding who will be picked in the reshuffle, sources said, “PM Modi’s focus is the Lok Sabha elections. So, a leader will be chosen on the basis of his following in his area, his hold on voters and workers and his ability to bring in the most votes. A leader will be chosen on the basis of his impact on areas around his constituency.”

“This ability (to bring votes) and performance will also decide which leader, or leaders, will be removed from the council of ministers,” sources added.

Sources also told The New Indian that the report of the internal survey, done by the party, will also play a part in the removal and selection of leaders.

The government’s decision to rejig the party shows that the BJP’s combinations and permutations for 2024 have begun in full swing as the party is determined to turn all the stones ahead of the election.

The selection criteria for leaders for the council of ministers show that the party wants to have maximum impact on the ground and wants to inspire the people who can bring them maximum votes.

Sources also told The New Indian that there is also a chance that some of the big names might get the axe. We will wait and see!
