EXCLUSIVE | ‘Fauda’ creator Avi Issacharoff delves into Israel-Hamas conflict dynamics

NEW DELHI: On Monday, Avi Issacharoff, an accomplished Middle East analyst and well-known commentator, is set to deliver a groundbreaking presentation, shedding light on the intricate challenges of Military Operations in Urban Terrain. As a prominent figure in the field, Issacharoff’s insights promise to offer a unique perspective on this complex subject.

Issacharoff, who currently serves as the Co-CEO of Faraway Road and is the creative force behind the widely acclaimed series ‘Fauda,’ has shared his invaluable firsthand experiences from working alongside the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israeli security forces in various battle zones, including the tumultuous region of Gaza.

Holding an MA degree in Middle East Studies and boasting fluency in Arabic, Issacharoff brings a multifaceted approach to his analysis of urban warfare. During an exclusive conversation with The New Indian, he remarked, “Victory will be when we see Hamas leaders like Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Deif dead. When we confirm their demise, just as Hamas terrorists have beheaded people in Gaza, we will have achieved victory.”

However, he also cautioned against viewing the ongoing conflict through a simplistic lens, adding, “It’s important to note that with 1,400 people killed and 240 hostages, I don’t see this as a clear victory. We may damage Hamas capabilities and weaken their regime significantly, but it comes at a considerable cost. I wouldn’t call it a good or complete victory for Israel.”

Issacharoff’s distinguished career includes being honoured with the “Best Reporter” award for his coverage of the Second Intifada under the banner of “Voice of Israel.” In 2004, he collaborated with Amos Harel to publish “The Seventh War: How We Won and Why We Lost the War with the Palestinians.”

Their follow-up work, “34 Days: The Story of the Second Lebanon War,” released in 2008, garnered awards from the Institute for Strategic Studies for its contributions to the understanding of security affairs in Israel.

The presentation by Avi Issacharoff comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East, triggered by Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7. This attack led to Hamas militants crossing into the Gaza Strip, resulting in substantial casualties on both sides. In Gaza alone, the death toll has surpassed 9,000, sparking global protests.

In one of the most recent tragic incidents, Israeli airstrikes targeted a densely populated refugee camp, claiming the lives of at least 50 Palestinians, including a prominent Hamas commander. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vehemently vowed to eliminate Hamas and has rejected calls for a ceasefire, accusing the militants of using civilians as human shields.

Avi Issacharoff’s presentation promises to provide a deeper understanding of the complexities of military operations in urban areas and the challenges that nations like Israel face when navigating such conflicts. His insights and experience are expected to contribute significantly to the ongoing discussions surrounding the region’s security affairs and the quest for lasting peace.
