Delhiites will have to cope up with dense fog and colder-than-hills weather conditions till Wednesday, December 28, India’s weather forecast agency has predicted.

On Tuesday, residents of Delhi and surrounding areas woke up to very dense fog, which reduced visibility to the minimum and forced drivers to tread cautiously on the roads.

The national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday as a cold wave brought down mercury across north India. In comparison, the popular hill station of Nainital witnessed a minimum temperature of degrees Celsius.

Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 4.5 degrees Celsius, just 0.5 degrees Celsius below Delhi’s temperature.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted similar cold weather conditions to prevail on Wednesday. The temperature is likely to increase from Thursday, it said.

“Dense to very dense fog is likely to continue over many parts of Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, West UP and in isolated pockets over north Rajasthan during the next 24 hours. However, dense fog in isolated pockets is likely to continue over the above region during subsequent 3-4 days,” the IMD informed.

Cold wave conditions are likely to continue in some areas of Delhi, Haryana, and Chandigarh on Tuesday and Wednesday. People in some areas of Rajasthan will have to protect themselves against the severe cold during the next two days, the weather agency predicted.

“Cold day/severe cold day conditions are very likely to occur in some parts over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on December 27 and over West Uttar Pradesh on December 27 and 28,” informed the IMD.

Normal life was severely disrupted in some cities of Rajasthan that recorded sub-zero temperatures on Tuesday. At a minimum temperature of -1.5 degrees Celsius, Fatehpur town in Rajasthan Sikar was ranked as the coldest place in the state. Churu and Pilani in Jhunjhunu district also recorded temperatures at or below 0 degree Celsius.

Meanwhile, residents of Delhi-NCR are rushing to hill stations in Himachal Pradesh to enjoy chilly weather and snowfall during their winter vacation. As per the IMD, five districts of the hill state will witness snowfall on December 29.
