SRINAGAR: An encounter erupted in Srinagar’s Khanyar area early Saturday. Security teams began a search operation at dawn, during which gunfire echoed through the area. A senior police official told The New Indian that terrorists were located in a residential building in the downtown neighbourhood.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police confirmed the incident, stating, “A search operation in Khanyar led to an exchange of gunfire. Law enforcement and security personnel are actively engaged.” Updates are expected as the situation progresses.
This marks the third terror-related occurrence in Kashmir since Friday. On the previous day, two migrant labourers from Uttar Pradesh were attacked in Budgam, both of whom are recovering from gunshot injuries in a Srinagar hospital.
The Army also reported noticing suspicious movement in the Panar region of Bandipora late on November 1. When challenged, terrorists reportedly opened fire before fleeing into the forest, prompting ongoing search operations.
This incident breaks a nearly 2.5-year period of no encounters within Srinagar city. The last recorded firefight occurred on April 10, 2022, when security forces eliminated two terrorists in the Bishambar Nagar area.
