New Delhi: In response to the tragic incident, where Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), has ordered more than 500 Nepali students to vacate the campus following protests over the alleged suicide of a Nepali student, Prakriti Lamsal, on Monday, February 17, 2025, The Embassy of India in Kathmandu expressed deep sorrow.

 

“The Embassy of India, Kathmandu, is deeply saddened by the tragic death of a Nepali student at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The Embassy extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased during this difficult time,” the statement said.

 

The embassy also confirmed that it is in constant contact with both KIIT authorities and the Odisha State Government, who have initiated an investigation into the matter. “The Embassy has been in touch with the authorities of KIIT as well as the Odisha State Government. The Embassy has been informed that the local authorities have initiated an investigation into the unfortunate incident,” it added.

 

Meanwhile, KIIT has attempted to manage the growing unrest by urging Nepali students to return to the campus. “KIIT has also issued an appeal to the Nepali students to return to the campus, resume their classes, and stay in the hostels.

 

 

It has also assured that academic losses of the students will be taken care of by the Institute,” the university said in a statement.

 

The Nepal Embassy in India and Nepal’s Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, have condemned KIIT’s response to the crisis, criticizing the university for not addressing the students’ grievances more effectively.

 

This situation has sparked demonstrations outside the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, where Nepali students continue to demand justice for Prakriti Lamsal and hold the university and authorities accountable.

 

” Nepali students studying in India form an important facet of the enduring people-to-people links between the two countries. The Government of India will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure the well-being of the Nepali students in India,” the Indian Embassy stated.
