Elon Musk seeks “Hardcore Software Engineers” for ‘Everything App’, no degree necessary

Elon Musk invites to skilled software engineers to develop an "everything app."

NEW DELHI: Elon Musk has issued a global call to talented software engineers to join his ambitious project of creating an “everything app.”

In a post on X, Musk encouraged “hardcore software engineers” to share their best work by emailing code@x.com.

He emphasized that traditional qualifications, like degrees or past affiliations with prestigious companies, are not a priority. Instead, he stressed the importance of exceptional coding skills.

“If you’re a hardcore software engineer and want to build the everything app, please join us by sending your best work to code@x.com. We don’t care where you went to school or whether you worked at a big-name company. Just show us your code,” Musk wrote on X.

Musk’s approach reflects his belief in skill-based hiring over traditional academic credentials. He has often voiced his preference for practical problem-solving abilities over rote learning.

Back in 2014, he sparked debate by stating that a degree is “not necessary” to work at Tesla if candidates can demonstrate exceptional skills.

What is an Everything App?

An “everything app,” or super app, is a multifunctional mobile application that combines services like messaging, social networking, e-commerce, and peer-to-peer payments, all in one platform.

Often compared to a Swiss army knife, this type of app is widely popular in Asia, where mobile devices are the primary way people access the internet.

In China, apps like WeChat dominate, offering users a single platform for daily needs. In a 2022 Q&A with Twitter employees, Musk highlighted the lack of a similar super app outside of Asia.

He pointed out that WeChat is an essential part of life in China and expressed his vision to create a global equivalent.
