NEW DELHI: Billionaire Elon Musk has said that the US government is “far higher” interested in prosecuting former US president Donald Trump, who has been charged for illegally storing secret government files at his residence.
In a series of tweets, the Twitter boss – who has often sided with Republicans and publicly criticized hypocrisy of Democrats to which President Joe Biden belongs – said that the “differential pursuit of justice” could prove detrimental to public trust in the US justice system.
“There does seem to be far higher interest in pursuing Trump compared to other people in politics,” Musk tweeted on Friday night, adding, “Very important that the justice system rebuts what appears to be differential enforcement or they will lose public trust.”
Again on Saturday morning, while replying to a tweet by celebrated author Stephen King, he said: “Almost everyone would agree that no one is above the law, but it must be applied equally. Differential pursuit of justice undermines public faith in the system.”

Trump – the current front-runner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary – is facing charges related to mishandling classified documents, including sensitive information about US nuclear secrets and military plans.
The 37-count indictment alleges that Trump stored the files at his Florida estate, even in unconventional locations such as a ballroom and a shower, and lied to investigators. The charges further accuse him of obstructing the investigation into the handling of the documents.
Notably, this is the first time a former US president has faced federal charges of this nature. The indictment reveals that Trump took approximately 300 classified files to Mar-a-Lago, his Palm Beach residence and private members’ club, after leaving office. Prosecutors claim that Trump attempted to impede the FBI inquiry by suggesting his lawyer “hide or destroy” the documents or falsely deny their existence.

Trump’s initial court appearance for this case is scheduled for next week, which coincides with his 77th birthday. The indictment makes it clear that Mar-a-Lago was not an authorized location for classified documents and outlines instances where Trump showed classified information to individuals without proper security clearance.
Trump has denied all charges, pleaded innocence and accused the Biden administration of witch-hunting. “The Biden administration is totally corrupt. This is election interference & a continuation of the greatest witch hunt of all times,” he said in a video statement on Friday.
