NEW DELHI: A tragic incident occurred near the Gateway of India when a boat capsized while en route to Elephanta Island. The ferry, named ‘Neelkamal,’ was carrying around 30-35 passengers when it overturned near Uran, Karanja, approximately 3.15 PM on the afternoon of December 18, 2024. The incident has left one person dead, with ongoing rescue operations.
As per Mumbai Police, the boat was carrying approximately 80 passengers, including five crew members. Initial reports indicate that 21 passengers have been rescued so far, with many being pulled from the sinking vessel while wearing life jackets. Rescue teams, including personnel from the Navy, Coast Guard, and local fishing boats, have been working tirelessly to evacuate survivors. According to reports from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the rescued passengers have been rushed to various hospitals across Mumbai for treatment.

The JNPT Hospital has reported 56 survivors, with three in critical condition and one confirmed dead. Meanwhile, Naval Dockyard Hospital reported eight stable passengers, with one in critical condition. Ashwini Hospital received one unstable patient, while St George Hospital reported that all nine of its patients were stable.
A major search and rescue operation has been launched with the deployment of 11 Navy boats, three Marine Police boats, and a boat from the Coast Guard. Four helicopters have also been involved in the search. Local authorities, including the Yellowgate Police Station, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, and nearby fishermen, are contributing to the ongoing efforts.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis provided an update, confirming that 20 people had been rescued and that five to seven people were still missing. The boat had left for Elephanta Island at around 3:15 PM, and rescue teams are continuing their search. The Coast Guard and Navy are focusing on locating the missing individuals and ensuring that no other survivors are left stranded.
The boat’s capsizing has sparked concerns about safety regulations for passenger ferries in the region. Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident, with further updates expected once the rescue operations are completed.
