NEW DELHI: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for the fifth day of questioning in the National Herald money laundering case.

He reached the ED office with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra even as top Congress leaders, including two chief ministers, continued to their protest against what they call “vendetta politics”.

The Gandhi scion has so far been questioned for more than 43 hours over a period of four days. On Monday, he was grilled for around 12 hours.

Besides Rahul, the financial probe agency has also summoned his mother and Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi in the same case on June 23. She was discharged from a Delhi hospital after treatment of Covid-19 related issues after 8 days on Monday. Doctors have advised her to take rest at home, the party said.

The Congress chief was initially asked to appear before the agency on June 8. However, the ED changed the date of her questioning after she tested positive for Covid on June 1.

The ED had registered a case of alleged money laundering around nine months back on the basis of an investigation of the Income Tax department. The IT probe was carried out based on a private criminal complaint filed by former BJP MP Subramanian Swamy in 2013.

Swamy claimed that Young Indian Limited (YIL) “took over” the assets of the defunct National Herald in a “malicious” manner to gain profit and assets worth over Rs 2,000 crore. The BJP leader also alleged that YIL had paid Rs 50 lakh to obtain the rights to recover Rs 90.25 crore which AJL owed to the Congress party.

Earlier today, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi launched an attack on the Central government for “hounding” Rahul through the ED.

“How does the Modi government deal with these issues (protests over Agnipath scheme)? One of them through their time tested mechanism ‘distraction, digression and deceit’. One of those distraction, digression and deceit is to keep hounding Rahul Gandhi. Four days and 40 hours! On fifth day, he will cross half century of number of hours. I submit to nation that he has been called again and again to distract people and to make sure that the issues that deserve attention — be it Agnipath or price rise — remains camouflaged and hidden,” he told media persons here.

Singhvi said the ED questioning of Rahul Gandhi is “utter revenge, retribution, retaliation, and reprisal” for consistently raising voices against the BJP government’s policies.

“There is nothing constitutional or legal about this process. Everything is personal, not constitutional. Personal grudge and personal vendetta!” he alleged.
