A life-size statue of Goddess Durga was set on fire by unidentified anti-social elements in Danapur, a satellite town in Bihar’s capital district of Patna on Wednesday night.

The temple is located in Makhdumpur Sarari village, under the jurisdiction of Shahpur police station in Danapur.

When the temple priest, Vishnu Bharti, arrived at the temple the following morning to perform morning rituals, he discovered that the upper half of the Durga statue, including the face, had been burnt.

The incident caused outrage in the area, and a large number of people gathered at the temple to lodge their protest. The police also arrived at the scene and recorded public statements.

According to the temple priest, a rehriwala (a vendor with a handcart) passing by the temple at around 2 am saw a slim man in dhoti-kurta suspiciously standing in front of the gate. When he asked the man about his presence there, he replied that he lived a few blocks away. The rehriwala did not raise an alarm at the time.

The suspects are believed to have entered the temple by jumping through a gap between the iron gate and concrete entrance arch.

Police suspect that the anti-social elements committed the crime to spread enmity between different groups. “I believe that anti-social elements have committed this crime to spread enmity between different groups in the area,” said Shahpur police station in-charge Deepak Samrat.

The police have launched an investigation and a manhunt to identify and arrest the perpetrators, he said.

The incident has caused shock and anger among locals, who have demanded swift action against those responsible. Many have expressed concern about the increasing frequency of such incidents in the area and have called for increased security measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
