Veer Savarkar’s grandson Ranjit tears into former Congress president Rahul Gandhi for his disparaging remark on his grandparent
The grandson of freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar minced no words as he attacked Rahul Gandhi for his recent comment on the Hindutva ideologue.
On Saturday, March 25, an agitated former Congress president said that “My name is not Savarkar. My name is Gandhi. Gandhi kisi se maafi nahi maangta (Gandhi does not make apologies to anyone)”. He was reacting to a question about him not apologising for his Modi surname remark.
Reacting to Gandhi’s comment, Ranjit Savarkar, the grandson of Veer Savarkar, told The New Indian, “It is a foolish statement. The whole country knows he can never be a Savarkar. He can never be compared with that name also because a dung beetle can never claim to be a sun.”
Ranjit Savarkar further added that Savarkar always fought for a casteless society, and Gandhi insulted a particular community and refused to apologize for that.
“Rahul Gandhi insulted a particular community and refused to apologise for that. So the man who is indulged in caste politics, he should never compare himself with someone like Savarkar,” Ranjit Savarkar said.
Gandhi’s remarks on Savarkar have not been taken lightly by others as well. The Shiv Sena, which is in alliance with the Congress in Maharashtra, had also warned Gandhi against using Savarkar for political gains.
Criticising the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena, Ranjit Savarkar said, “Uddhav Thackeray had said Congress should not insult Savarkar. But saying that is not enough. He should demand an apology from Rahul Gandhi.”
“And if Congress refuses to do it, he should take appropriate action to see that it happens. Just saying mere a few words is not enough,” Ranjit Savarkar said.
While he had already filed a case against Rahul Gandhi in Mumbai in another case, Ranjit Savarkar said that he will take legal action in the current case too.
“I already filed a case against Rahul Gandhi in Mumbai. Court has issued directives to the police to issue him a notice. So, I expect soon he will be brought before the court,” Ranjit Savarkar had said.
“I have also filed a case in the Dadar police station for his remarks in Bharat Jodo Yatra. For the current defamation, I am going to file another case,” he added.
While Veer Savarkar is a revered figure among many groups, his name has been a bone of contention between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition parties, especially the Congress.
While the BJP has always eulogized Savarkar for his contributions to India’s freedom struggle, the Congress has accused him of having a divisive and controversial past.
