DMK wins all bypoll seats in Tamil Nadu

NEW DELHI: The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party achieved a sweeping victory in Tamil Nadu bypoll on Saturday, solidifying its political dominance in the state. In the Vikravandi Assembly constituency, DMK’s Anniyur Siva, also known as A Sivashanmugam, emerged victorious with a substantial margin of 67,757 votes over his nearest rival, C Anbumani of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), an ally of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), who secured 56,296 votes.

Throughout the vote-counting process, Siva maintained a consistent lead, with the gap between him and Anbumani widening as each round progressed. This victory marks a significant continuation of DMK’s winning streak in Tamil Nadu, a trend that began with the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The by-election in Vikravandi was necessitated by the passing of DMK legislator N Pugazhenthi in April this year.

The DMK-led alliance’s success extends beyond the Vikravandi bypoll. In the 2024 Parliamentary elections, the alliance clinched all 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu, as well as the lone Puducherry segment. This consistent performance underscores the party’s strong foothold in the region.

In addition to Tamil Nadu, the results of the 2024 Assembly bypolls across India revealed a diverse political landscape. The INDIA bloc won 10 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured two, and an independent candidate bagged one seat.

The DMK’s resounding victory in Tamil Nadu, especially in the Vikravandi bypoll, not only reinforces its political clout in the state but also highlights the party’s effective campaign strategies and strong voter base. This success is a testament to the party’s resilience and its continued appeal among the electorate.
