NEW DELHI: Revered actor and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) President, Vijayakanth passed away at 71 years at a private hospital in Chennai, on Thursday.
According to the private hospital, Vijayakanth had been on ventilator support following complications arising from pneumonia.

Party sources revealed that the DMDK chief was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday for a routine health check-up.
The news of Vijayakanth’s demise prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express his condolences in a heartfelt post on X.
Referring to the politician as a “close friend”, the PM extended sympathies to the late leader’s family and fans.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam had already reached Vijayakanth’s residence in Chennai to pay his respects and offer condolences to the grieving family.
The leader of DMDK was previously hospitalised on November 20, receiving medical care for a respiratory ailment.

Vijayakanth’s legacy encompasses a prolific career in the film industry, where he starred in 154 movies, before making a significant foray into politics.
The actor-politician founded the DMDK and served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) twice, representing the constituencies of Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam.
His political zenith was marked by his tenure as the leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly from 2011 to 2016.
In the past few years, Vijayakanth’s health had become a matter of apprehension, prompting him to withdraw from active involvement in politics.
