NEW DELHI: Renowned Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh recently faced a legal notice from the Telangana government, urging him to avoid performing songs promoting alcohol, drugs, or violence during his concert in Hyderabad. The notice sparked a lively response from the artist, who addressed the issue with humor and sharp observations at his Ahmedabad concert.

During his performance in Gujarat—a state with strict prohibition laws—Diljit playfully acknowledged the concerns. “Today also, I won’t sing such songs. It’s very easy for me to tweak the lyrics. Main khud sharab nahi peeta (I don’t drink alcohol myself),” he told the audience, emphasizing his personal detachment from drinking.

He took the opportunity to critique Bollywood’s stance on alcohol advertising. “Bollywood actors endorse alcohol brands; I don’t. Wherever I go, I perform and quietly leave. Why are you targeting me?” he questioned.

Diljit didn’t stop at humor. He turned the spotlight on broader societal issues, challenging Indian states to declare themselves dry. “If all states declare themselves as dry states, from the next day, I promise I will never sing a song about alcohol again,” he vowed. Highlighting the revenue dependency on liquor sales, he added, “During the pandemic, everything shut down except liquor stores. You can’t fool the youth with this hypocrisy.”

In a display of adaptability, Diljit altered his song lyrics during his performances, turning the controversy into a light-hearted yet meaningful moment. “Declare a dry day on the same day as my concert, and I won’t sing any alcohol-related songs,” he quipped, sparking laughter and applause.

Diljit’s remarks struck a chord, addressing the double standards in policies related to alcohol. His refusal to endorse liquor brands, contrasted with Bollywood’s active promotion, underscored his principled stance. “Don’t mess with me,” he said firmly. “I mind my business. Let me do my job in peace.”

With his characteristic charm and boldness, Diljit Dosanjh once again proved why he remains a voice for reason, humor, and authenticity in the entertainment industry.
