DGCA implements oversight measures in 2023 to fortify aviation safety standards

These measures play a critical role in mitigating potential safety risks and maintaining the highest standards of safety across the industry.

NEW DELHI: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) elevated its safety standards within the aviation industry, marked by a significant surge in surveillance activities and enforcement actions in 2023.

In an all-time high, DGCA conducted 5,745 surveillances during the year, consisting of 4,039 planned surveillances, 1,706 spot checks, and night surveillance. This substantial increase of 26 percent compared to 2022 underscores the regulatory body’s dedication to ensuring compliance and safety across the aviation landscape.

Based on the findings of these surveillances, DGCA took a robust stance against non-compliant personnel, airlines, and other operators. A total of 542 enforcement actions were initiated in 2023, witnessing an impressive 77 percent increase from the 305 enforcement actions undertaken in the previous year.

Noteworthy enforcement actions included the suspension of the Approved Training Organisation of Air India, along with financial penalties imposed on prominent airlines such as Air India, Air Asia, Indigo, and Spice Jet for various non-compliances.

DGCA also took enforcement actions against erring pilots, cabin crew, Air Traffic Control Officers (ATCOs), non-scheduled airlines, flying training organisations, and aerodrome operators.

The intensified safety oversight initiatives by DGCA are considered a significant stride towards creating safer skies. These measures play a critical role in mitigating potential safety risks and maintaining the highest standards of safety across the industry.

The year 2023 witnessed a comprehensive approach by DGCA to uphold safety obligations, emphasising the need for continuous vigilance and stringent enforcement to ensure the well-being of passengers and the integrity of the aviation sector.
