Dense fog, colder days in Uttar Pradesh till Jan 6

IMD has sounded an orange alert in 59 districts of UP in view of the cold wave.

People living in more than 90 per cent of geography in Uttar Pradesh will witness cold and heavy fog conditions for the next five days till January 6, weathermen announced on Monday and sounded an alert.

According to a bulletin released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), 59 districts in northern and eastern and some parts of western Uttar Pradesh are likely to witness dense to very dense fog.

An orange alert has been issued for Gonda, Sitapur, Ghazipur, Ballia, Basti, Gorakhpur, Balrampur and surrounding districts in eastern Uttar Pradesh. In western UP, districts like Meerut, Bulandshahr, Badaun, Aligarh, Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Saharanpur, Baghpat and Sambhal will have to brace up for colder days, the IMD said.

Dense to very dense fog is very likely to occur at a few places in the capital Lucknow and other districts. Cold day conditions are very likely to occur at few places,” the weather forecast agency said.

IMD issues three kinds of alerts: yellow, orange, and red according to their severity. The orange alert is the second most severe alert, which exhorts citizens to be prepared and updated about the situation.

Cold wave situation will prevail in 15 districts of the state till January 6, said an IMD official.

Meanwhile, several schools have changed class timings keeping in view the ongoing cold wave.

Temperatures have dipped in several states across India, with Delhi registering a minimum temperature of 5.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday’s first day of the year.

After several warmer-than-usual mornings, people in Delhi woke up to severe cold on Monday morning. Several areas in the national capital were shrouded in a thick blanket of dense fog, slowing down the speed of vehicular movement.

The minimum and maximum temperatures are most likely to remain below average over many parts of central India and adjoining areas of peninsular, east and northwest India this month, according to the agency’s forecast.
