NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor and Delhi Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s campaign against the central government’s ‘anti-Delhi’ ordinance got a major boost on Thursday, June 1.

After Janata Dal United (JDU), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Trinamool Congress (TMC), Shiv Sena (UBT), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and the left bloc, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) also extended its support to the campaign.

The move came following CM Kejriwal’s meeting with DMK president and Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin in Chennai on Thursday. CM Stalin also assured that his party will vote against the ordinance in the Rajya Sabha and work towards its defeat.

Expressing his gratitude for TN CM Stalin, CM Kejriwal highlighted the unjust actions of the central government. He emphasised that despite the people of Delhi fighting for eight long years to secure justice, the Supreme Court’s verdict in their favour was overturned by the central government within just eight days.

CM Kejriwal denounced the centre’s ordinance as “undemocratic, unconstitutional, and against the federal structure of the nation”.

The Delhi CM further revealed that their campaign has been receiving favourable responses from political parties across India.

CM Kejriwal emphasised that the outcome of this battle in the Rajya Sabha will serve as a crucial semi-final to the 2024 elections, delivering a powerful message that the united opposition stands against the central government.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, AAP MPs Sanjay Singh and Raghav Chadha, and Delhi education minister Atishi were also present in the meeting along with DMK leaders TR Balu and Kanimozhi.

Expressing his gratitude for the warm welcome received, Kejriwal highlighted the purpose of the meeting and said, “This ordinance threatens to undermine the hard-fought victory of the people of Delhi in the Supreme Court that came after eight years of legal struggle.”

On May 11, 2023, the Supreme Court issued a revolutionary order in favour of the people of Delhi, explaining the importance of an elected government’s authority to govern. Recognising the elected government’s thumping majority, the court affirmed that control over services and bureaucrats is vital for effective governance.

The court directed that the elected government should have full and direct control over services and bureaucrats, ensuring that all powers lie with the elected government.

Punjab CM Mann thanked his Tamil Nadu counterpart MK Stalin and said that the AAP delegation has not come here just to highlight the problems of the people of Delhi, but has come over here to save democracy.

CM Kejriwal pointed out that the central government is troubling the non-BJP states in the country either by issuing unconstitutional ordinances or through the office of the governor.

“As you all know, the Stalin-led state government here in Tamil Nadu has constantly been troubled by the Governor who is refusing to sign the Bills. Similarly in Punjab, my government had to go to the Supreme Court as the Governor was not allowing us to call the budget session of the state legislative assembly,” he said.
