NEW DELHI: As the weekend approaches, Delhi finds itself shrouded in moderate fog, reducing visibility to 400 metres at Palam. The morning chill, with a minimum temperature of 6.2ยฐC, is a degree below the norm and is expected to rise to around 9ยฐC by Saturday due to prevailing cloudiness.

Notably, December 15 marked the seasonโ€™s lowest minimum temperature at 4.9ยฐC. The current forecast suggests that the minimum temperature will hover between 6-8ยฐC until at least December 27, with the maximum temperature expected to remain above 23ยฐC during this period.

Contrary to expectations of a colder winter, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted a warmer season for the country as a whole from December to February. Cold waves are expected to be less intense and frequent than usual in various regions, including north, northwest, central, east, and northeast India.

IMD suggested that there are chances of isolated drizzles in the National Capital Region (NCR) on Friday evening and late at night, the impact over the weekend is expected to be limited, although cloudiness is likely to persist.

December has seen a dry spell, with no significant rainfall except for some drizzle on December 4. On Thursday, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 6.4 degrees Celsius, two notches below the seasonโ€™s average.

Looking ahead, the India Meteorological Department predicts light rainfall on Friday, which could further lower the minimum temperature in the national capital to 5 degrees Celsius. As Delhi residents bundle up against the chill, the city is set to experience a cool and possibly damp weekend, with weather conditions remaining on the milder side compared to the typical winter expectations.
