NEW DELHI: In an unexpected development, the Delhi Police has chosen not to oppose the granting of bail to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the outgoing chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), who has been accused of sexual harassment by several women wrestlers.
During the bail hearing at the Rouse Avenue court in Delhi on Thursday, the lawyer representing the wrestlers expressed concern about Singh’s influence and the potential to tamper with witnesses if granted bail. The lawyer urged the court to impose strict conditions on Singh’s bail, preventing him from approaching the complainants or witnesses.
Surprisingly, the Delhi Police’s lawyer, when asked for their stance, said, “We are neither opposing the bail petition nor supporting it. The court can decide.”

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s lawyer, Rajiv Mohan, assured the court that there is no threat from his client, and he will not attempt to influence the case in any manner.
Earlier this week, the court had granted Singh interim bail for two days, along with Vinod Tomar, the suspended assistant secretary of WFI.
The women wrestlers, who have accused Singh of sexual harassment, have raised doubts about the intent of the government-formed oversight panel responsible for investigating the allegations. They alleged that the panel displayed bias in favor of Singh, who is also a BJP MP. The six-member panel, led by the renowned Indian boxer MC Mary Kom, submitted its report to the government, but it has not been made public yet.

Despite the chargesheet filed against him by the Delhi Police on June 15, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has adamantly refused to step down from his position as the chief of WFI. The charges against him include sexual harassment, criminal intimidation, and stalking.
The court reserved its order on Singh’s bail plea and is set to pronounce its decision at 4 pm.
