NEW DELHI : Delhi Police rescued a 76-year-old senior citizen who was trapped on the terrace of a four-story building engulfed in flames in North Delhi’s Shakti Nagar.

The fire broke out on November 18 around 2 pm in a house where it started on the ground floor and quickly spread, consuming the entire building. A total of 20 fire tenders were deployed to douse the blaze.

A short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire, though investigations are still ongoing. The flames rapidly spread through the building, reaching all floors and filling the staircases with thick smoke. While most of the residents of the building managed to escape unhurt, one elderly woman, who was unable to walk and trapped on the fourth-floor terrace, was left behind.

The smoke filled the staircases, and the lift was non-functional, making it impossible for her to escape. With the fire raging below and the air growing more toxic, the woman faced grave danger.

Responding swiftly to distress calls, Inspector Ramesh Kaushik, SHO of PS Roop Nagar, along with HC Rajneesh and Constable Jitender, risked their lives to rescue the elderly woman. Despite the thick smoke and intense heat, they bravely made their way up to the fourth floor. After locating the woman, who was in a state of panic, the officers carried her down through the smoke-filled staircases, ensuring her safety.

The police team’s quick thinking and courage played a crucial role in preventing a tragedy. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Delhi) praised the officers for their heroic efforts, stating, “Their actions saved a life in the most difficult circumstances.”
